Nubians, originating from the region south of Egypt in what is now Sudan, were known to the ancient Romans primarily through their interactions with Egypt and other African regions. The Nubians, particularly those from the Kingdom of Kush, were renowned for their distinct culture and appearance. After Roman conquest and expansion into the African territories, Nubian women, like many others from conquered regions, were enslaved and brought to Rome. Nubian women, once enslaved, often worked as domestic servants in Roman households. Their tasks ranged from cleaning and cooking to more specialized roles such as wet nurses or caretakers for children. Some Nubian women might have been employed in agricultural settings, particularly on large Roman estates where their physical labor was needed.

Due to their distinct appearance, Nubian women were sometimes used as entertainers or in roles where their “exotic” looks could be displayed. This could include performing in public spectacles or serving in more visible positions within wealthy households. Nubian women were also subjected to concubinage, as were many women from conquered regions. Their distinct beauty, characterized by dark skin and other unique features, made them desirable in the eyes of Roman slave owners. Nubian women were characterized by their dark skin, which was a distinctive feature that set them apart from other populations in the Roman Empire. They often had strong, defined features, including high cheekbones and full lips. The hair of Nubian women was typically curly or tightly coiled. In some cases, they might have worn their hair in elaborate styles, braids, or even shaved it, depending on cultural practices and the context of their enslavement.

*Suebian slave: The Suebi (also spelled Suevi) or Suebians were a large group of Germanic peoples originally from the Elbe river region in what is now Germany and the Czech Republic. In the early Roman era they included many peoples with their own names such as the Marcomanni, Quadi, Hermunduri, Semnones, and Lombards. New groupings formed later, such as the Alamanni and Bavarians, and two kingdoms in the Migration Period were simply referred to as Suebian. During the reign of Augustus the first emperor, Rome made aggressive campaigns into Germania, east of the Rhine and north of the Danube, pushing towards the Elbe. In 406 AD, Suebian tribes led by Hermeric, together with other Danubian groups including Alans and Vandals, crossed the Rhine and overran Gaul and Hispania. They eventually established the Kingdom of the Suebi in Galicia. With the breaking up of Hunnic power after the Battle of Nedao there was also a short-lived Kingdom of the Suebi on the Danube, under Hunimund. They were defeated by the Ostrogoths, one of the peoples of eastern origin who had been allies of the Huns. In the sixth century the Suevic Longobards moved from the Elbe to become one of the major powers of the Middle Danube, in competition with the dynasties from the east such as the Herules, Gepids and Ostrogoths.During the last years of the decline of the Western Roman Empire, the Suebian general Ricimer was its de facto ruler.[6] The Lombards, with many Danubian peoples both Suebian and eastern, later settled Italy and established the Kingdom of the Lombards. The Alamanni, Bavarii and Thuringii who remained in Germania gave their names to the still-existing German regions of Swabia, Bavaria and Thuringia respectively.(Wikipedia)
